Build The Perfect Dept 56 Display Table

Dear Fellow Department 56 Collector:

Christmas time is the part of the year that we all love for one
reason(s) or another.

Now we won't go into all the reasons why this season is loved so much,
but if you are reading this, one of the reasons you probably like
Christmas is because it is the time of the year that you can get out
your wonderful collection of Dept 56 houses and display them.
Yes, us collectors can't wait to start building our displays. Some of
us start contemplating our displays back in September already.

But, I would venture to guess, that the biggest complaint that Dept 56
collectors have, at Christmas time, is ...

where, or on what, are they going to display their collections on.
If you are like our household, my husband will start complaining about
lugging the 4 x 8 sheet of plywood (or whatever wood it is) out to our
den. Then he has to go out to his shop and bring the sawhorses in to
set them on. Then since they aren't all the same height, he has to
level them before he can hoist that 70 pound piece of wood up on the
horses.
Some years I don't use the 4 x 8 sheet for displaying my collections.
In those years I will use every available shelf, end table, or TV
cabinet for my houses and then sometimes I even have some houses left
over.
Basically after about 25 years of collecting I am getting a little
tired of my limited choices for my displays.
So this year I asked my husband to build me a display table - but not
just any display table.

It had to meet my specific demands.
Here were my demands:
* It had to be portable. No more carrying around heavy pieces of wood
in which he would almost kill himself doing.

* It had to be easy to store. Tables with legs are a real pain to
store. Using sawhorses were just as bad, and hiding a big 4 x 8
sheet of wood behind boxes is not easy to do.

* It had to be sturdy. I didn't want to place my valuable houses on
something that could possibly cave in or break.

* It had to be versatile. I didn't want to be back in the same
position in a few years from now when my choices would be the same
as they have been -- only now I have one more table to use.

* It had to be cheap (rather inexpensive). As with most of the things
I use in my displays, I didn't want to spend a lot of money on it.

And lastly,
* It had to be able to hold my backgrounds if I wanted to put one up.
And, if I didn't want a background with one my displays, I didn't
want to see anything which would distract from my precious houses.

After explaining my list of demands to him, all he could say was ......
"Okay, Tutz, whatever you want!"
Needless to say, my sweet darling came through and met every one of my
demands.
* Basically, he took a 4 x 8 sheet of wood and cut it so that it is
easy to carry and easy to store.

* He used some very common and very sturdy things for the legs and
made it such that it can be completely disassembled (which again
helps with the handling and storage of it.)

* It certainly was sturdy. He proved it by laying on it and it didn't
budge one inch.

* It was also versatile. He showed how you can place the tables such
that you have over 20 different combinations. This means over the
next 20 years, whether I feel like putting up a small display or a
big display, I can use something different each year. The other
good thing is that I can put my displays in different rooms now,
too!

* He spent as little money as he could on it. The most expensive item
he bought was the 4 x 8 sheet of wood. Everything else he had to
buy multiples of and most of them were under a couple of dollars or
so.

* Lastly, he had my frame for my backgrounds, so depending on my
display, I can put them up or not, and you'd never know the
difference if there was a support there or not.

After he got done building the tables I told him my last request was
...

for him to write down how he did everything so that my fellow
collectors could have the same wonderful tables for themselves.
Now if you or your spouse wants to build these tables, it really is not
that difficult. Anyone with some basic wood working skills can do it.
The only tools you will need are a drill and saw. If you have more
power tools, that would help, but it is not necessary.
His final instructions are pretty good. They are full of details and
pictures - probably more then you need.
Here is a photo of one of the tables with my background and skirt.

Here is the complete set-up!

This picture above was taken after I was all done setting up my houses.
Believe it or not, this was taken at night with all the lights out. However,
with the camera flash it looks like daytime.

The only reason I mention this is because I have a string of white Christmas
lights in the sky behind the backdrop. Here is another photo where I try and
get the "stars" showing through.

Find other ZORGIUM pages using AZ.COM:

Enter your search keyword(s) into the search input field of http://az.com
The zorgium specific results appear in the right hand margin.

Find other ZORGIUM pages using your favorite search engine:

Enter your search keyword(s) and the keyword "zorgium" into the search input field of http://bing.com, http://yahoo.com or http://google.com.

Heads up: There's an ongoing spamdexing of Google searchbot algorithms. Sites that are 'copies of copies' and cloaked sites which include Zorgium keywords presented to search engine crawlers yet garbage content presented to human visitors were hosted on thousands of IP addresses and domains registered immediately after the introduction of Zorgium in November of 2009. The Hostgator/'The Planet'/Softlayer datacenters in Texas seem to be the epicenter of this activity in conjunction with anonymously registered domains of various TLD's but primarily .info domains at Godaddy which, in our opinion, has some sort of connection to the domains of goldmint.in and goldmint.org. Google has begun to notice this and has begun to lower the ranking of these sites and put our original sites back on top of the search rankings. These actions, as far as we can tell, negatively impact the use of the keyword 'zorgium' as a search term and provided little benefit, if any, to the perpetrators.

ZORGIUM note to content providers: If you don't want your page to appear in Zorgium's search abstraction then put an exclusion for "Zorgium" in your web server's robots.txt file.
